TEXAS HILL COUNTRY PROFILE
Kerr County is in the heart of the Texas Hill Country and Kerrville is the premier city with a
cosmopolitan atmosphere yet retaining the old world charm. Like no other region of the state,
Kerr County offers relief from Texas' generally hot summer climate. Even in mid-summer, the
Hill Country usually produces cool nights and pure, fresh, unpolluted air. The days are pleasant
and comfortable, a contrast to hotter and more humid parts of the state and nation. Golf and
other outdoor recreation is possible throughout the year with numerous balmy days even in
January and February.
The Guadalupe River, a spring-fed stream, has its headwaters just southwest of Kerrville and
flows through the county basically from west to east. Thousands of spring-fed creeks are also
found throughout the Hill Country.
A place of great beauty, the Texas Hill Country has flowing springs, pure water, clean,
invigorating air and abundant game. In the early days, buffalo, deer and wild turkey flourished.
The deer, and turkey remain, and exotic game animals raised on many ranches in the area have
replaced the vanished buffalo.
The presence of limestone in abundance makes the Texas Hill Country an ideal place to raise
strong and vigorous horses; the soil closely approximates that of Kentucky in relation to the
raising of horses.
Historically, Kerr County has been a favorite hunting paradise, retirement area, and summer
camp center. Its fabulous climate, beautiful hills and valleys, were known many years ago when
it developed a following of more prosperous types who became aware of its breeze-swept and
naturally beautiful hills and valleys, and the Colorado type spring-fed rivers and creeks.
Kerrville has outstanding medical facilities; a prominent four year liberal arts college; and one
of the best regional airports in Texas - 6,000 ft. paved runway and four instrument approaches.
Despite its great climate, magnificent scenery, unique location, charm, unpolluted air and lack of
traffic congestion, the Hill Country of Texas has gone relatively undiscovered. However, this
seems to be changing...
A Rockefeller foundation survey listed the area within a 100 mile radius of Kerrville as having
the most ideal climate in the nation. Money Magazine recently rated Kerrville as the best
retirement area in Texas-and ranked the city as the 11th best retirement place in the United
States.
